#1 I see you attempted to shade it, but it's waaaay too subtle. Plus you need to take into account that there are different types of shadows. Here's a little tutorial that I found on here that really helped me:[link]
#2: this one's really easy. Try to add some sine to the eyes. You can get really elaborate with it but, really, just adding 1 or 2 white ovals in the eyes will help them not look so lifeless.
There's no point if your heart's not in it. There're plenty of really good artists that almost exclusively work in black and white.
